I love the story. I have been Judy Collins fans, saw her years ago at Kleinhans. A story about her, that I don't know if you heard. Judy Collins son committed suicide, of course she was distraught, you know who contacted her to help her go on? One of my other favorites, Joan Rivers, she had lost her husband to suicide, she told Judy to keep on performing, don't give up, it will get you through it. True, sometimes, no matter what life throws at us we need to pull on our boots and keep going.
I like the way you linked the two stories into one - the first leads into the second... I am guilty of referencing things in your current posts and stories (sometimes previous posts), in my comments. But I realize, she, or other readers, probably doesn't have an earthly idea what I'm referencing here; she probably is working on two or three stories past this one - too many "irons in the fire" to remember.
I felt like Judy Collins' words echoed your life changes - you had to be like, whuuut! I went back to listen to a few of her songs. She has a great voice, and at 84 and still doing it, incredible!
Great column, Kate. I saw Judy Collins at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, commonly referred to by north country locals as SPAC, around 1979. Interestingly, her opening act was Janis Ian. Both were very good.
Judy Collins is scheduled to perform at The Riviera Theatre on April 13.
I suggest you might want to attend.

Keep doing what you love, because we love it too!!! I also like the podcast form- hearing your writings in your voice make it much more enjoyable. ☺️
