Bless you forever dear for writing this. Obviously, the current management of your former employer is as asinine as can be. You and Maria were an immense loss. And, as has since become obvious, the losses there have continued with so very much of the channels distinction being lost with it. Hope to heaven their corporate bosses are happy. I can't believe that will continue after a few more ratings "books." Be well. And please keep on making lots of noise wherever your work appears.
Way to go! You put the truth out there, very tastefully I might add, and for that I thank you! There is a big hole in the Channel 2 news team with you, Heather, Michael and Maria’s absences!
Thank you for this! So many places tell you not to discuss salary. What you did for your friend was important.I remember being told, years ago at a large company, that I was well paid for my position. Clearly the person across the table wanted to make me feel like I didn't deserve an annual raise, or they were quoting what they were told. My mother always told me "Never love a large company, it doesn't love you back." Even interpersonal relationships were hard with back stabbing ladder climbers. I am happy working for myself, making less money.
Good for you for laying out what this employer values more- liking their own pockets… let’s just say they will loose viewers- my last mainstay has now left and with that I will leave being a viewer..
its unfortunate that they think more highly of themselves than the hard working people that got them there. I wish I could say it’s more rare than we think, but it’s not. You were all in the public eye so people SEE what this company is all about. Unfortunate!!! They are the losers in this scenario and you my friends are the winners!!
I truly believe management should realize that they are only as good as the employees that work for them, and now their worth is showing by all the talent and qualified people that are leaving them!! No money amount will ever be enough to deal with that kind of ego!!
Well written Kate, what a shame how people are treated. Miss you more than words can say, God bless and be happy. Thank you for all the joy you generated to so many. Love you.
Kate thank you for sharing this. Corporate America is an awful experience. I work for a company that had a 400 Billion profit! Yes I said 400 Billion but expects us to pitch in and work extra for free because we are salary though our salaries do not reflect the new hiring salaries for incoming professionals. This news station will be at the bottom of the barrel as it once was. I will miss Heather and do miss you and Maria, all 3 of you glorious women always made me smile.
Good for you! A toxic management team will low ball you because they think you can’t/wont leave. Time for Channel 2 to wise up before their sinking ship is totally submerged.!
I worked in a typically male dominated field and while I made the same amount of money per hour as everyone else (union scale), I was often given jobs that carried less hours. The reasoning was because I was married and didn't need to make as much. I had to speak up and remind them that I had more senority. It took a while and I was extremely uncomfortable every time I had to say something. Thank you for your wonderful insights.
Well said, Kate. You did the right thing, moving on from an atmosphere that, it seems, was less than ideal. And well done helping the latest departee. It seems to me the ship is circling the drain. Keep up the excellent writing and being a bright part of our lives. Unfurl...
I can only watch ch2 because it's the only Bflo station my Spectrum cable subscription gets... However, I only DID watch ch2 because of you joining their team. It was then that I rediscover Peter & David from Rochester! How fun - old school guys... But then, I quickly loved Kevin, Heather, Maria, WOOTIE, Carl ( i heart Carl!), & Nath!
Obviously, I no longer dvr MB.
I am guessing this WON'T happen... because they are male - but if Nath & Kevin leave... ALLLLL the fun & the joy will be gone. It will just be work. & news. The employees can get work anywhere. The viewers can get news anywhere. I'd rather feel better about it & believe it & care about it.
This is SPOT ON. It's so frustrating to feel afraid to bring up money--like we should just feel lucky to be employed. This is how people do not get paid what they are worth. Kudos to you for doing the research and having courage. I've been shamed twice for my salary, once by a man, once by a woman--both of who made much much more than I did-and believe me, it was definitely not enough to shame me about. So you are not alone! Please keep writing--this was so great.

So many contract negotiations in my four decades at 7. Nightmares every one! Thanks for writing about this.

As always, you speak (and live) your core values. That is what sets you a part. Bravo and please keep it up!
